Natural Stone Laser Cleaning Materials
Technical parameters for laser cleaning of natural stone types including limestone, sandstone, travertine, and flagstone. Optimized for pollution crust removal, graffiti elimination, and biological growth cleaning with substrate preservation.
Limestone Porosity & Thermal Risk
Limestone has 15-30% porosity and calcite composition (3-4 Mohs). Laser cleaning requires fluence below 1-1.5 J/cm² to avoid calcination (CaCO₃ → CaO + CO₂). Darkened surface indicates overheating above 600°C safe threshold.
Sandstone Softness & Quartz Content
Sandstone varies from soft (10-30 MPa) to hard (100-200 MPa) based on cementation. Quartz grains reflect 1064nm well, allowing fluence up to 2-4 J/cm² on quartz-rich sandstone. Clay-cemented sandstone requires 1-2 J/cm² to avoid grain dislodgement.
Travertine Voids & Filler Preservation
Travertine has natural voids filled with cement or resin in finished stone. Laser cleaning of filled travertine requires fluence below 1 J/cm² to avoid differential ablation. Unfilled travertine tolerates 1-2 J/cm² but may clean unevenly.
Heritage Sandstone Monument Cleaning
Historic sandstone buildings (sandstone castles, churches, courthouses) develop black crusts from pollution. Laser cleaning removes 100-300 micron crusts without the 1-2 mm loss from chemical poultices or micro-sandblasting, preserving carved details.
