Ferrous metals develop iron oxide (rust) and mill scale during processing and exposure. Laser cleaning removes up to 0.5 mm of rust per pass or mill scale in a single pass, leaving a clean surface without the 5-15 micron material loss typical of abrasive blasting.
Heat-Affected Zone Prevention
Short pulse durations (10-50 ns) keep heat localized to the contaminant layer. Thermal penetration below 10 microns prevents metallurgical changes to the base metal, preserving hardness, temper, and corrosion resistance.
Stainless Steel Surface Integrity
Stainless steel relies on a passive chromium oxide layer for corrosion resistance. Laser cleaning removes embedded iron contamination without damaging this layer, unlike wire brushing which embeds iron particles and initiates pitting corrosion.
Structural & Heavy Fabrication
Carbon steel beams, plates, and weldments require mill scale and rust removal before coating or welding. Laser cleaning achieves SA 2.5 surface finish (near-white metal) without abrasive media disposal costs, meeting AWS D1.1 and SSPC-SP10 standards.
