Wood finish tests

Water-based finishes are the most challenging coating type for laser cleaning. Unlike oil-based finishes or bare wood, water-based polyurethane and acrylic lacquers form a thin, low-absorbance film that reflects rather than absorbs laser energy — making it easy to overheat the underlying wood before the coating lifts. Either test below gives us what we need; you don't have to do both.

Water drop test

  • Place one small drop of water on an inconspicuous area and wait 60 seconds. A water-based finish (polyurethane, acrylic lacquer) will bead or sit on the surface. An oil-based finish or bare wood will absorb it quickly, darkening the grain.
  • Water-based finishes respond differently to laser parameters than oil-based ones — knowing in advance lets us arrive with the right settings rather than calibrating on your piece.

Alcohol swab test

  • Dampen a cotton swab with 91% or higher isopropyl alcohol and rub a small hidden area firmly for 10 seconds. Shellac dissolves immediately and the swab picks up color. Lacquer softens and smears. Polyurethane and conversion varnish show no effect.
  • Shellac and soft lacquer require the lowest laser energy settings of any wood finish — identifying them upfront prevents scorching on decorative or antique pieces.
  • No reaction means a harder film finish. Standard wood parameters apply and no special handling is needed.

FAQ

How far in advance should I prepare the work area?

The day before is ideal. At minimum, clear the area and confirm power access the morning of the appointment. Last-minute rearranging on job day adds time and cost.

Do I need to hire an electrician before the appointment?

Only if your site lacks a 240V/30A outlet within 25 feet of the work area. Most garages and shops already have a dryer or welder outlet. When in doubt, send us a photo of your panel — we can usually confirm compatibility in advance.

The item I need cleaned is fixed and can't be moved. Does that change anything?

Not necessarily. The laser and extractor come to the workpiece. Just make sure we have clear line-of-sight access to the surfaces you want cleaned and that power is nearby. Let us know during booking if access is tight so we can plan accordingly.
